Every gas-operated AR (those that don't employ a piston system) needs a gas block of some type to cycle between shots. If you're building an old-school or retro style AR, it may have a fixed front sight that doubles as the gas block or some fold-up variant thereof. But if it's any number of countless newer designs, it'll probably have a gas block that only serves as the gas block. Furthermore, more often than not, it'll be low-profile in its dimensions, so that some type of handguard can cover and shield it. The handguard will have a pic rail on top on which the shooter can mount either a fixed or a folding sight to serve as the rifle's front sight. If you're in the latter group, this is your gas block. See below for more info.
